Cho-oyu Expedition (8,188m) Overview
Trip Overview – Cho Oyu Expedition (8188m)
The Cho Oyu Expedition (8188m) offers an incredible opportunity to climb the world’s sixth-highest mountain and one of the most accessible peaks above 8,000 meters. Known as the “Turquoise Goddess” in the Tibetan language, Cho Oyu lives up to its name with its striking beauty and majestic presence. Situated on the border of Nepal and China, it is the westernmost peak of the Khumbu sub-range in the Mahalangur Himal.
Cho Oyu is widely regarded as one of the easiest 8,000-meter peaks, making it a popular choice for climbers aiming to step into high-altitude mountaineering. Its relatively moderate technical difficulty and high success rate have made it the second most climbed mountain above 8,000 meters.
Climbing History
The first attempt to climb Cho Oyu was made in 1952 by Sir Edmund Hillary, Tom Bourdillon, and George Lowe. However, the team was forced to turn back due to technical challenges and avalanche risks.
The first successful ascent took place on 19 October 1954 via the Northwest Ridge by Herbert Tichy, Joseph Jöchler, and Pasang Dawa Lama as part of an Austrian expedition.
The first Nepali climber to summit Cho Oyu was Ang Phuri Sherpa, who reached the top on 29 April 1987. Since then, many successful expeditions have been organized, establishing Cho Oyu as a preferred choice among high-altitude climbers.
