Annapurna Iv Expedition Overview And Highlights

A Hidden Himalayan Challenge

Annapurna IV (7,525m) is one of the lesser-climbed peaks in the Annapurna range of north-central Nepal, offering a rewarding challenge for experienced mountaineers seeking a quieter alternative to Nepal’s more crowded expedition mountains. Located between Annapurna II and Annapurna III, the mountain rises above the village of Humde in the Manang region and is visible from several sections of the famous Annapurna Circuit.

Climbing Route and History

The standard route on Annapurna IV follows the Northwest Ridge. The mountain was first explored by renowned British mountaineer Bill Tilman in 1950, while the first successful ascent was achieved in 1955 by a German expedition led by Heinz Steinmetz.

The expedition begins with a scenic trek along the Annapurna Circuit before reaching Base Camp at approximately 4,800 meters. Climbers typically establish three higher camps before making their summit push. The route features steep snow slopes, hard ice sections, exposed ridges, and technical climbing terrain. The section between Camp I and Camp II is particularly demanding, often requiring fixed ropes and careful navigation through steep, exposed pitches.

Why Climb Annapurna IV?

Unlike many of Nepal’s more commercialized peaks, Annapurna IV offers a genuine Himalayan expedition experience with fewer climbers and a greater sense of exploration. The approach route benefits from the well-developed infrastructure of the Annapurna Circuit, providing comfortable teahouse accommodation and support services up to Humde. Beyond this point, the journey transitions into a true expedition environment.

Climbers are rewarded with spectacular views of the Annapurna range, remote mountain landscapes, and the satisfaction of standing on a rarely visited 7,000-meter summit. Annapurna IV is an excellent choice for experienced alpinists looking to advance their high-altitude climbing goals while avoiding crowded routes.
