Upper Dolpo Trek Overview & Highlights
A Journey Into Nepal’s Hidden Wilderness
The Upper Dolpo Trek is one of Nepal’s most remote, untouched, and culturally fascinating adventures. Hidden behind the Himalayas in western Nepal, this extraordinary journey takes trekkers into a land of dramatic landscapes, ancient monasteries, high mountain passes, and traditional Tibetan-influenced villages that have remained isolated for centuries.
The adventure begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, followed by another flight to Juphal — the gateway to the Dolpo region. From here, the trail enters the stunning Shey Phoksundo National Park, one of Nepal’s largest and most beautiful protected areas.
One of the first major highlights of the trek is the breathtaking Phoksundo Lake (3,600m), famous for its deep turquoise water surrounded by rugged cliffs, pine forests, and waterfalls. As the journey continues beyond the lake, the trail follows narrow gorges, remote valleys, and vast high-altitude landscapes that feel completely untouched by modern life.
The trek crosses several challenging mountain passes, including Kang La (5,306m), Saldang La (4,785m), and Jeng La Pass (5,100m), offering spectacular panoramic views of snow-covered peaks, barren Himalayan deserts, and endless mountain scenery.
Upper Dolpo is not only known for its natural beauty but also for its rich Tibetan Buddhist culture. Ancient monasteries scattered throughout the region provide a glimpse into the spiritual traditions of the local people. Among them, Shey Gompa — also known as the Crystal Monastery — is one of the most sacred and historic monasteries in Dolpo. Built in the 11th century, it remains an important spiritual center for Tibetan Buddhism and offers a truly peaceful and unforgettable experience.
Along the route, trekkers pass through remote villages such as Saldang, Namduna Gaon, Tokyu, and Dho Tarap, where traditional lifestyles continue much as they have for generations. The people of Dolpo still practice ancient customs, relying on yak herding, barley farming, weaving, and seasonal trade for daily life.
Due to its isolation, Upper Dolpo has preserved a rare and authentic Himalayan culture rarely found elsewhere in Nepal. Trekkers may encounter yak caravans crossing the high trails and, with some luck, even spot wildlife such as blue sheep or the elusive snow leopard that inhabit these remote mountains.
The return trail passes through charming settlements like Serkam, Khani Gaon, and Tarakot before reaching Dunai and finally returning to Juphal.
The Upper Dolpo Trek is more than just a trekking journey — it is a once-in-a-lifetime exploration into one of the Himalayas’ last hidden wildernesses. From the magical beauty of Phoksundo Lake to the spiritual atmosphere of Shey Gompa, every step of this adventure offers a unique combination of raw nature, ancient culture, and unforgettable Himalayan scenery.
