The Dolpo to Mustang Trek is undeniably one of the exceptional traverses linking Nepal’s two most beautiful regions.
The Dolpo and Mustang are fascinating territories in the Nepal Himalayas where the locals have lived for centuries to the rhythm of the yak caravans ensuring the supply of salt to the lower Himalayan valleys.
The deep blue lake of Phoksundo, the remote and beautiful villages of Dolpo & Mustang, with a lot of passes of 4000m-5000m to be crossed, the little exploration and an option to climb Araniko Chuli before heading to the Lomanthang via Kekyap La – this Dolpo to Mustang trek will leave you enticed with its beauty, remoteness, and culture.
This is definitely a great moment to know, see, and experience the ancestral way of life of the people living in high mountains. The trek around Upper Dolpo and Upper Mustang is truly amazing, where landscapes & culture are completely different from the rest of the country. There are a lot of questions that come into mind when you start planning about Dolpo to Mustang Trek. Well-organized logistics, special permits to trek in Dolpo and Mustang, and an experienced & strong team are very important when it comes to doing a long trek like this.

Yes, of course.
Our itinerary is quite long where we will trek along to Chharka Bhot via Phoksundo Lake, then head toward Araniko Chuli Base camp before entering Lomanthang, Mustang. For this, you will need to take the Special Permit for both Upper Dolpo and Upper Mustang.
Another option that you can follow is to head toward Niwas La and Jungben La pass from Chharka Bhot, which will lead you to Sangta and then to Kagbeni. You will need to take the special permit for only Upper Dolpo.
You do can start this trek from Upper Mustang. Another great itinerary is to follow the Upper Mustang trail until Lomanthang, then head toward Araniko Chuli Base camp and descend to Phalyak via Ghermi La, Niwas La & Jungben La.
If you have enough time and are willing to walk, then trekking from Beni to Dolpo via Dhorpatan is a great choice.
If you are limited in time and want to do it more comfortably, the flight is the best option. If you are adventurous enough and want to do it by road, there’s still a possibility. You can take the bus from (Kathmandu-Nepalgunj-Jajarkot) and then to Talubagar by a small vehicle. From there, you will need to walk for around 3 days to reach Dunai.
The new routes are opened and constructed in Nepal every year. So, the above information could not be precise. You can take the bus until Jumla and then start trekking to enter Dolpo.
With around 5x 5000m and 2x5600m passes to be crossed, 20 days of continuous trek above 3800m, this will be a long and challenging trek. You will be trekking in a very remote region of Nepal and away from all the infrastructure.
One should be physically fit enough and should be able to walk around 7-8 hours per day.
Autumn is the best season to do this trek. It is ideal to start the trek around mid-October.

Today, we immerse ourselves in the spiritual heart of Inner Dolpo, exploring the mystic Shey Gompa. This 11th to 13th-century ochre monastery is a marvel of Tibetan art and culture, adorned with vivid murals and ancient statues. A monk from Sikkim will guide us inside, offering a glimpse into its historical treasures.
Shey Gompa, part of the Kagyugpa lineage, holds an enchanting story of its creation by a Tibetan Lama who arrived on a mystical snow lion. While the murals are relatively recent, the monastery houses a rare scroll that narrates the legend of the sacred Crystal Mountain and its surrounding Kora. This includes the location of a white-water lake believed to reveal distant views of Mount Kailash to pilgrims.
To the west of Shey, perched on a red cliff, lies the holy Tsakhang Gompa. This smaller yet vital Kagyupa monastery, known as the “Red Gompa,” carries a legacy tied to prominent teachers like Tilopa, Marpa, and Milarepa. The current incarnation of its Lama, the 17th in the line, is a young monk from Phijor, presently studying in Kathmandu.
The Gompa is a visual delight, decorated with colorful prayer flags, vibrant paintings, and intricate Thankas. Take time to walk the Kora around Shey Gompa and its surroundings, soaking in the spiritual energy of the area. Relax and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Himalayan range, where the natural beauty enhances the serene atmosphere of this sacred land.

We ascend along the right side of the river, then descend before encountering chortens that mark the start of another ascent. At the pass, avoid mistaking the first summit for the true Chharka La; the actual pass, at 5,030 meters, is another hour away. Once there, the effort is rewarded with stunning views of the majestic Mt. Dhaulagiri, which will accompany us for the next few days.
The trail continues with a mix of ascents and descents for a couple more hours, offering glimpses of villagers working in the fields against a backdrop of breathtaking scenery.
