The Pikey Peak Trek is a stunning journey in the lower Everest region, with magnificent views of the eastern Himalayas. This newly opened trail in the Solukhumbu region is perfect for those seeking a quick escape into the mountains, without the strenuous demands of more famous treks like Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Base Camp. Sir Edmund Hillary, one of the first to summit Mount Everest, once said that Pikey Peak (4,065m | 13,333ft) provides some of the best panoramic views of Everest. If you’re looking for a shorter trek in the Solukhumbu region, Pikey Peak is an excellent option. Since it is a recently added trekking route, you will have an off beat and solitary trekking experience.
One of the greatest advantages of the Pikey Peak Trek is its relatively uncrowded nature compared to more famous routes in Nepal. This allows trekkers to enjoy the tranquility of the surroundings without the distraction of large crowds. The trek offers plenty of opportunities to explore, with options for camping under the stars, tasting local foods, and interacting with the friendly Sherpa community.
The trek stands out because of its natural beauty and its straightforward, well-maintained route. A major advantage is that you don’t need to take the often chaotic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. Instead, you can drive for 7-8 hours from Kathmandu to Dhap (2,850m | 9,348ft.), where the trek begins. From there, the trail leads through picturesque mountain villages and forests of rhododendron and pine.
Along the way, you’ll get to immerse yourself in the culture and traditions of the Sherpa people, as well as interact with communities such as Tamang, Rai, Limbu, and Chhetri. The trail is dotted with traditional stupas, prayer wheels, and colorful prayer flags. The trek allows you to experience the beauty of the Himalayas without overexerting yourself.
Unlike the heavily trafficked trails to Everest Base Camp and Annapurna, Pikey Peak remains much quieter, offering a more peaceful experience for you and your body as well. For years, it was less known because access to the trailhead was difficult. However, a new road from Kathmandu to the Solu highway has made the trail more accessible, opening up this gem to trekkers.
During the trek, you’ll have the chance to savor a variety of local dishes while immersing yourself in the region’s extraordinary natural and biological diversity. The trail is rich with rare plant and animal species, as well as cultural landmarks like stupas and the vibrant Tibetan prayer flags that flutter in the wind.
The mountain views from Pikey are particularly stunning at sunrise when the golden light reflects off their snow-clad peaks, creating a magical and unforgettable sight.
Starting from Dhap, the trek leads through charming villages such as Jhapre, Junbesi, and Phaplu, where you’ll spend the nights in cozy accommodations. The path meanders through lush valleys and dense forests of pine and rhododendron trees. If time permits, you can also visit the serene Thupten Choling Monastery, where you can observe traditional Buddhist rituals and chants. These will certainly add a spiritual touch to your adventure.
Along the trail, you’ll stay in teahouses run by locals, where you’ll enjoy authentic meals prepared with fresh, local ingredients. The trek is considered moderate in difficulty and takes about 8 to 10 days to complete. It’s best to trek between September and May, as the monsoon season from June to August can make the paths slippery and dangerous. It is also advisable to hire a local guide who is familiar with the route and local culture and can assist in case of emergencies.

The Pikey Peak Trek is best experienced during autumn (September to December) and spring (February to June). These two seasons are renowned for their pleasant weather and breathtaking views. Autumn is a festive time in Nepal, as the major national celebrations take place, infusing the country with a vibrant and joyful spirit. Spring is equally beautiful, with the entire landscape coming alive with colorful wildflowers and lush greenery, making it a perfect time for trekking.
In contrast, the monsoon season (June to August) brings heavy rains to Nepal, which can make trails slippery and increase the risk of landslides and floods. Leeches also become more prevalent along the forested paths. While this time of year isn’t ideal for trekking, it can still be an excellent period for plant lovers, as the forests are thick with lush vegetation and vibrant flora.
Winter (December to February) can be harsh, with cold temperatures that may not be suitable for everyone. If you’re planning to trek during winter, it’s important to check whether tea houses at higher altitudes are open, as many close during the colder months when locals move to lower elevations to avoid the snow and freezing temperatures.
