Reaching Khayer Lake At 4,500 Meters Is The Ultimate Highlight Of The Khopra Trek

The primary goal of the Khopra Ridge Trek is to ascend to Khayer Lake, situated at an impressive altitude of 4,500 meters. This sacred lake rests at the base of Annapurna South, which stands at 7,219 meters. Deeply revered in both Hinduism and Buddhism, Khayer Lake attracts numerous pilgrims, particularly during August and September, when thousands of devotees make their way to worship at the temple located near the lake.

The hike from Khopra Danda (ridge) to Khayer Lake takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, offering spectacular views of Mt. Dhaulagiri, Tukuche Peak, Dhampus Peak, Gurja Peak, and several other stunning Himalayan summits along the way.

Mulde Peak, Standing At 3,660 Meters, Is An Exceptional Viewpoint That Surpasses Poon Hill, Which Is At 3,210 Meters

The Mulde Peak trek offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, providing an even more spectacular experience than Poon Hill. Located at 3,660 meters, it is just a short 30-minute ascent from Dobato, which sits at 3,350 meters along the Khopra Trek. This vantage point is ideal for witnessing a stunning sunrise over the Himalayas. From here, trekkers can take in sweeping views of towering peaks, including Annapurna I (8,091 m), Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Annapurna South, Nilgiri, Dhampus Peak, Tukuche Peak, Himchuli, Gurja Himal, Annapurna III, Annapurna IV, and many more, along with the vast surrounding valleys.

Khopra Ridge – A Community-Powered Trek

The Khopra Trek, often called the Khopra Ridge Trek, leads hikers to Khopra Ridge at 3,660 meters, where the final community lodge is situated. Along this route, trekkers can enjoy spectacular views before continuing toward Khayer Lake. This is why many refer to the journey as both the Khopra Ridge Trek and the Khopra Community Trek. Unlike many other trails, this trek directly supports the local community, as their collective investment enhances hospitality services and maintains the trekking paths, ensuring an enriching experience for both visitors and locals.

The Khopra Ridge Trek Remains One Of Nepal’s Least Crowded Trekking Routes

Unlike the more popular trails in the Annapurna region, such as Annapurna Base Camp, Poon Hill, Mardi Himal, or the Annapurna Circuit, the Khopra Trek sees far fewer trekkers. This makes it an excellent choice for those seeking a quieter and more immersive experience in nature. The short journey from Pokhara offers breathtaking natural beauty, stunning mountain vistas, warm hospitality from local communities, and a chance to explore traditional villages along the way.

Best Season for the Khopra Ridge Trek

Hills and slopes seen during the Khopra Trek
You can trek through dense jungles of rhododendron, bamboo, oak, and pine during the Khopra trek. From Bikat Adventures

The Khopra Ridge Trek is best experienced in two distinct seasons: Spring (April) and Autumn (October).

In Spring, trekkers may encounter patches of hardened snow at higher elevations, but daytime temperatures tend to be slightly warmer compared to Autumn, where the trail is typically free of snow. The seasonal air also differs—Spring brings a moist atmosphere, while Autumn offers dry and crisp conditions.

During Spring, winter has already receded from the slopes, yet snow patches can still be found at altitudes above 12,000 feet. Daytime temperatures are generally around 20°C, though nighttime temperatures can drop close to zero. If the sun is obscured by clouds or there’s occasional rainfall, daytime temperatures may dip further to approximately 15°C.

Khopra Ridge in Autumn (October)

Autumn resembles winter in some ways, being colder than Summer, although snow patches are not present.

Nights during Autumn can get quite chilly, with temperatures in October dropping to around 0°C.

During the day, you can expect temperatures around 15°C. However, any rain or light drizzle can cause the temperature to drop by a few degrees, so it’s wise to always keep a jacket with you.
